Born in Algeria in 1933, Fred Forest is a pioneer of video art, relational art, telematic art and net art. From the 1960s onwards, he has been examining the nature and function of art and its structures, in the era of the information society. His (often immaterial) work focuses on the characteristics of modern technologies, but also in particular on their ideological foundations and their implications for the social sphere. He considers public participation and collaboration to be hugely important, and is the co-founder of the Sociological Art Collective and the International Communication Aesthetics Group.
